Fusion Works

Fusion Works

I’ve dabbled in Fusionism for the past 25 years, combining found objects with pieces I create.

Usually, the ‘found’ part is a vessel or stool of some sort which supports the clay sculpture. I enjoy the search for these objects and the nostalgia I feel when I find them. They bring memories of the past and inspire me with ideas for how to give them a new purpose and tell a new story.

Each piece I select to use intrigues me from the moment I see it. There is something special there that catches my attention. It could be a patina that time has deposited or an unusual shape that catches my eye. I’m always drawn to items that are a little off beat as they have the most room for storytelling.

Fitting the new with the old presents its own challenges. The clay shrinks as it dries and fires so scale and shrinkage need to be calculated ahead of construction for a seamless fit once the firing process is complete.

The common thread running through all of these pieces is that they are anchored in the nostalgia of the past and pushed forward through the novelty of the sculptures I create today. The end result is a rejuvenation, or fusion, between past and present, which brings joy and humor to the people who welcome them into their homes.
